about the mural

In advance of Pride 2021 on 4th September 2021, we invited artist Erin Holly to Basildon to celebrate Our Towns LGBTQIA+ community. As a trans artist herself, Erin is passionate about creating visibility and affecting positive change through her art.

Following a series of creative workshops with Basildon’s LGBTQIA community and Essex Youth Service’s Basildon LGBTQIA+ Youth Group, Erin has developed a piece which plays off of a dinner table scene, reimagining the ’nuclear-family-around-a-dinner-table’ scene which often features in media and advertisements .

The artwork uses reference material from a 1950s advertisement  and integrates the artwork created by Essex Youth Service’s Basildon LGBTQIA+ Youth Group

basildon pride

Basildon Pride was founded in 2018, following a significant rise in tension directed towards the LGBTQIA+ Community in the borough.  The response was a march through Basildon Town Centre with the message that “Love Conquers Hate” followed by a celebration at Colors Nightclub.
